Focus on…

December 9, 2008

Focus… on what?

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

(Col 3:2 NASB)

(Mat 16:23 NASB)

But He turned and said to Peter,

“Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”

And He said to him,

” ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

(Mat 22:37-40 NASB)

For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

(Rom 8:6 NASB)

There is a problem with pain and suffering in this life and world.  It runs the spectrum from silliness to horrific and devastating.

Silly – being depressed / angry / sad / envious of the possession of things you do not have or used to have.  This can be silly, laughable when viewed from a “…mind set on things above”.  Wanting the newest car when the one you have works and is reliable and obessing about it.   There is noting wrong with purchasing a new car if you can – just don’t let it rule your mind and life, if you cannot.

Road rage – this is serious but also silly.  getting angry at someone being careless / foolish / or another angry driver on the road – What is the point and what good does it do?  I have had my share of giving myself permission to road rage… and regret each and every time I did it.  You do not know what someone else is dealing with,  why add to the mix of anger and chaos in the world?

Death of someone you love.  This is a big one.  Whether child, mom, uncle, friend…. this is a big one if not the big one.  We all know it is coming,  just not now…  This cannot be laughed at and is not silly.

Eating – I eat every day.  Most of the world’s population would love to eat what I throw away.  This is a big one too.  Think about watching someone you love die of hunger or choose to not eat so you can.

Serving God however and whenever you can.  I need to do more on this.  A young man I know and respect is near the end of 1 year of world missions,  living in dangerous places, getting robbed in South Africa, fighting off diseases in South America – all for the priviledge of preaching the gospel of Christ by serving others who need help desparately.  And I hesitate sometimes to mention my faith to strangers…

What is your focus on?  Choose to change that focus right now!

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

(Col 3:2 NASB)
